What causes it
Almost always impact, but not always the drop you remember. A hairline crack can sit for weeks before the digitiser fails. Backlight faults are different: those are usually a blown fuse or a damaged backlight circuit on the board, not the panel at all.

What affects the price
Panel type is the main driver. On phones, a glass-only repair is cheaper but only viable when the display underneath is genuinely undamaged. On laptops, resolution and whether the panel is touch-enabled matter more than screen size.
